So you came to New York City to make a name for yourself as a writer. Well, while you're writing the next great American novel, you might as well hone your skills and make some dough — rent isn't cheap, after all. Here are 5 NYC tech companies that are hiring writers:

Copywriter at

What they do: Yodle makes marketing software. Apparently, they're pretty good at it, and the company was recently purchased by Web.com for around $300 million.

What you’ll do: You’ll be working with Yodle’s User Experience Team to create concepts and content for their print and online marketing efforts.

Why you want to do it: Not only does Yodle have good medical benefits for you and your family, they also offer discounts on your pet’s health insurance. You can also enjoy free lunches, chair massages, gym memberships, commuter benefits and company happy hours.

Who they’re looking for: Someone with at least three years experience and a strong portfolio of content published both online and in print.

Editor-in-Chief at

With limitless eateries, shops, startups, fashion and art around us, it’s almost impossible to not be inspired in our SoHo headquarters.

What they do: Thrillist's aim is to show people how to spend their free-time and money. They're a lifestyle guide for the modern American. Having met several of their writers, I can personally attest that they're cooler than me.

What you’ll do: You'll serve as the Editor-in-Chief for a new liquor-focused site they're launching. You’ll be in charge of the overall direction of the property and building it into the leading spirits site on the web. No easy task.

Why you want to do it: If that’s even remotely a question, this is not the job for you. If you salivate at the prospect of being the leading authority on all-things-liquor in the U.S., you'll already know how cool this opportunity is.

Who they’re looking for: Someone with at least seven years of experience working in digital publishing and a passion for writing about booze.

Branded Content Producer at

What they do: Gimlet Media makes high-quality, professionally produced podcasts — as opposed, of course, to the type people make in their basements. Ever heard of the podcast StartUp? That was them.

What you’ll do: You’ll be developing audio campaigns and advertisements.

Why you want to do it: Gimlet Media is going places, and you can go along for the ride. Plus, how cool is it going to be to hear Alex Blumberg's silky-smooth voice reading your content on the air?

Who they’re looking for: Someone with solid journalism skills — think research, fact checking, interviewing, etc.

Copywriter at

Our headquarters in NYC sits in Chelsea, but our growing tech team works from our SoHo, Chelsea, and Greenwich Village offices.

What they do: You know what they do.

What you’ll do: You’ll be joining WeWork’s marketing team at their corporate offices in New York, where you'll be helping the company develop their brand's voice and tone. You'll also be doing a ton of writing in that voice and tone.

Why you want to do it: You’ll be working at one of the world’s fastest growing startups, which is pretty sweet.

Who they’re looking for: Someone with a bachelors degree and at least two years of experience writing and editing marketing copy.

Copywriter at

What they do: ClassPass is a network of fitness studios. You sign up for a membership and you can take fitness classes from any participating studio.

What you’ll do: You’ll be writing marketing copy across mediums — think blogs, websites, apps, emails, etc. You will not, and they're explicit about this, be writing any editorial copy.

Why you want to do it: This is a fairly entry-level position with a ton of opportunity to grow your skill-set. Besides, you’ll get ClassPass, a nationally recognizable brand, on your resume forever.

Who they’re looking for: Someone with at least two years of experience writing copy.
