Life just got a lot better for new parents working at one of New York’s largest tech startups.
announced today that starting in April every employee will be eligible for 26 weeks of fully paid leave when they give birth or adopt a child. That perk is valid regardless of the employee’s gender, country of residence or family circumstance, and can be used at any time over two years.“Our goal was to position Etsy for the long-term, given the changes happening in family structures, roles and workplace culture globally,” Juliet Gorman, Etsy’s Director of Engagement said in a statement. “We also wanted to align our internal policies with the spirit of our marketplace, which offers a more fulfilling, flexible way to be a creative entrepreneur.”
Only a handful of American tech companies offer equal time off to all employees, and most of those are located in Silicon Valley. Facebook announced a similar policy last November, and Netflix has been steadily increasing their parental leave policy.
Current U.S. law requires companies with more than 50 employees to give parents 12 weeks of leave, but that leave doesn’t have to be paid.
