The generation-defining startup Snapchat is growing up, moving East and heading to the big city.

The Venice, California-based company plans on adding as many as 396 new employees to their New York office, up from around 160 today.

Snapchat’s eastward expansion represents a significant bet on New York City for the company’s future. In total, Snapchat employs around 900 people globally, and such a large New York office is bound to play a significant role in the company's growth plans.

In return for creating new positions, Snapchat stands to gain as much as $5 million in tax breaks from Empire State Development. In order for the company to get the incentives, they'll have to create the new jobs over the course of the next five years, and keep them through early 2027.

So far, it’s unclear what sorts of positions the company plans on adding in New York, but at the moment they have listings for several design, sales and advertising positions locally, as well as one software engineer. We’ll fill you in as we know more.

Snapchat currently maintains an office in the old New York Times building in Midtown, which has reportedly recently been expanded.

The company has been on a roll lately, and news of their New York expansion comes on the heels of a massive $1.8 billion Series F funding the company received in May— one of the largest tech funding events of the year.
