Fun in the sun: 7 startups share how they celebrate summer

It’s easy to forget that the concrete jungle is actually an island and therefore the perfect setting for some fun in the sun. NYC tech took advantage of the heat wave and scheduled epic summer outings for their teams. From boat trips to sand castle competitions, these summer parties are not your father’s corporate events.

Updater

“Friendly competition and abundant team spirit are what makes an epic field day, and that’s exactly what Updater gave our employees earlier this summer. We hired ZogSports to create a field day, while I worked closely with their team to make sure the activities were a perfect fit for our amazing team. After the end of an intense two-day offsite of brainstorming and diving deep into our business, we split into randomly assigned teams and fiercely competed in games like tug-of-war and blindfolded Pictionary. It was a great way to blow off some steam and bond with our colleagues. We cheered each other on, broke into spontaneous dance-offs, and celebrated the winners at a happy hour. The result? An incredible experience that allowed us to connect beyond our individual departments, not to mention exclusive bragging rights for the winning Pink Team!” — Ashley Lunsford, people experience manager

Bettercloud

“When the summer season hits, we BetterClouders know how to get out of the office and have a good time. This year’s plan was simple: a take over of the Pier 63 field for some sun and games with a happy hour on NYC’s favorite boat/bar hybrid, The Frying Pan. With games like spikeball, ultimate frisbee, 90s throwback red rover and kickball (fueled by our favorite rosé), we took the day and focused on a major aspect of what our company stands for: A bunch of awesome people hanging out and making fun memories.” — Tyler Lares, office manager

Catchpoint

“Summer at Catchpoint is celebrated with our annual summer outing at Pier 13 in Hoboken. Significant others, spouses and children are all invited to one of our favorite events of the year. With a great view of the skyline, our employees enjoy an afternoon by the water where they savor food from a variety of food trucks serving lobster rolls, mac and cheese and ice cream. Events are organized for the children of the employees and a putting green is on-hand to entertain both children and adults. There’s no better way to celebrate the warm weather than with good friends, family, delicious food and a well-deserved cocktail.” — Scott Edwards, global talent acquisition lead

Yotpo

“Yotpo's 2018 summer outing took place on Governor's Island. We kicked it off with a scenic ferry ride to the island. Then came competitive team events featuring pool noodles, hula-hoops, beach balls and plastic bats. When we play, we play hard and a few folks definitely wound up on the ground — but it was all in good fun. Next came the rosé, margaritas and food. Some people opted for mazes, bikes, putt-putt and rock-climbing, but most chose sunshine, hammocks, additional beverages and quality time with incredible people. Everybody took home a Yotpo picnic blanket to keep the summer times rolling.” — Michal Vilenchuk, people experience manager

Bizzabo

“This June, Bizzabo celebrated the start of summer with a jam-packed day of bonding. Kicking off with a catered Shake Shack lunch in Madison Square Park, the bonding became competitive with a city-wide scavenger hunt throughout Manhattan. After a full day of intense clue-finding, competition quickly turned into kumbaya as everyone arrived at a cozy speakeasy in the Lower East Side for a company-wide talent show, perfectly ending an unforgettable day of Bizzabonding.” — Shivina Kumar, brand and communications manager

Unacast

“This year, we had a very special summer party. Since we have offices in both Oslo and New York, we usually we have two company wide roundtables — one in June in New York and one in December in Oslo. However, since we just closed our Series B, this summer we went to Ibiza for a week-long workation! We kayaked, hiked and relaxed by the pool, and to top it all off, at the end of the week we went on a sunset cruise around the island, complete with dinner, drinks and swimming!” — Linda de la Fonteijne, project manager

fiverr

“Every year, Fiverr hosts an offsite for employees in both the Tel Aviv and U.S. offices. This year, the U.S. summer overnight took place in early June on the beautiful beaches of Long Branch, New Jersey at the Ocean Place Resort and Spa. The trip started off with team-building activities including bingo and a sandcastle competition followed by some down time at the tiki bar, the beach and the pool. The night ended with an island-themed dinner on the beach, a fire pit with s’mores, a karaoke dance party and a photo booth to document the night's festivities. With beaches, palm trees, pools and camaraderie, all employees enjoyed their little summer getaway!” — Abby Forman, PR manager
