During this time of economic uncertainty, one New York-based startup is bucking the trend by hiring aggressively.

Online mortgage startup Better.com plans to hire 1,000 people across all of its offices by the end of 2020 — that includes its New York headquarters, as well as its offices in Charlotte and Irvine.

As a business, Better.com aims to improve the mortgage industry through technology. People can save time and money when using the company’s platform to find a mortgage or refinance their homes because it cuts out the middlemen and unnecessary fees.

Because of its online model, the company has actually seen business rise dramatically, with demand going up 200 percent in the month of March, according to Crunchbase. Eighty percent of this business was from people looking to refinance their homes.

With that increase in business comes the need to hire more people. Crunchbase adds that the company is looking to hire around 150 people per month for positions in sales and mortgage operations.

The coronavirus pandemic has unfortunately caused millions of Americans to lose their jobs, with workers in the hospitality industry being hit especially hard. That’s why Better.com is specifically looking to hire people with hospitality experience. On a company landing page, the company says that no real estate, tech or finance experience is needed, and it will consider candidates regardless of whether they have a college degree. The company is hiring for a wide array of roles and says it provides training for all employees.

“Hospitality workers understand the importance of creating meaningful experiences and we aim to bring that spirit to our customers,” the page reads. “Hospitality workers have the same characteristics that we look for in our employees: hustle, grit, customer-orientation, stress tolerance, adaptability, flexibility and diverse capabilities and backgrounds.”
