How GameChanger Defines Product Innovation
At youth sports tech platform GameChanger, innovation starts with the user, said General Manager of Emerging Sports Brandon Rhodes.
“Know your user, understand their problem and build something that truly adds value,” Rhodes said. “If we are not doing that, we are not innovating.”
GameChanger has had a busy year: Just ahead of the spring youth sports season, the company announced its most comprehensive product update to date, which included 1080p streaming, automatic highlight reels, a full suite of new coaching tools and more. This platform overhaul included launching a Game Clock feature in basketball that makes it easier for families and fans to follow along, as well as a partnership with hardware providers for both fixed and action cameras like GoPro and Mevo to improve the streaming experience.
“Innovation isn’t just about new features — it’s about making thoughtful decisions that balance growth with trust and long-term impact on the community we serve,” said Chief Commercial Officer Cynthia Kleinbaum Milner.
What Does GameChanger Do?
GameChanger empowers youth sports coaches, families, organizations and athletes to stay connected through live streaming, team management, statistics and scorekeeping. Available on iOS, Android, and the web, GameChanger covers nearly 10 million games annually and 1 million+ teams a year.
But GameChanger leaders like Rhodes and Kleinbaum Milner aren’t satisfied with just improving what already exists. According to their colleague, Senior Vice President of Sales and Business Development David Shapiro, they’re actually changing how the market thinks and behaves.
“We’ve done that in baseball and softball by bringing scorekeeping, team management and video into a single, seamless experience that many wouldn’t have thought possible before,” Shapiro said.
As GameChanger grows and its products evolve, the three leaders are uniform in their desire to protect the standard of quality and their obsession with the customer.
“That has been core to who we are from day one,” Rhodes said. “It shows up in the details and in whether families, coaches, and athletes actually feel the difference. Scale can dilute that if you are not intentional, so protecting it matters.”
The key to protecting the standard of quality at GameChanger? People, alignment and disciplined decision-making.
During the spring product update, Shapiro saw firsthand the level of alignment, focus and cross-functional teamwork required to bring a major evolution of GameChanger’s ecosystem to life.
“What impressed me most was how clearly the vision translated into execution — from the product itself to the user experience, to how we communicate both internally and externally,” Shapiro said. “It was a strong reflection of how GameChanger turns strategy into tangible impact.”
Built In caught up with Rhodes, Kleinbaum Milner and Shapiro to learn more about how GameChanger leadership across commercial strategy, emerging markets and go-to-market execution works together to turn a shared vision into real-world impact.
What Guides Product Strategy at GameChanger
As GameChanger scales, a few core factors guide how leaders evaluate new opportunities and determine where teams should focus their energy.
“First, does this better connect families?” Rhodes said. “That is at the heart of what we do. Second, does it solve a real problem? Not a hypothetical one, but something our users are actively dealing with. Third, does it help us grow the business in a meaningful way?”
The best opportunities tend to hit all three, he explained. If something only checks one box, it is usually not where the leaders decide to invest their time.
“I believe in focusing on a small number of high-impact bets rather than spreading ourselves too thin across many smaller ones,” Shapiro added.
As opportunities come their way, it’s important they stay disciplined, strategic and proactive in choosing where to invest.
“That focus is what enables us to drive meaningful, lasting impact,” Shapiro said.
Kleinbaum Milner agreed with her colleagues, adding that she also considers factors like revenue potential and scalability, the tradeoffs in resource allocation, and whether the opportunity creates strategic leverage — like new distribution or partnerships.
“Ultimately, it’s about focusing the organization on the few things that can drive meaningful, durable growth,” she said.
And when the leaders do decide to move forward with an opportunity? Well, that’s when lockstep collaboration comes into play.
How Cross-Functional Collaboration Works at GameChanger
There are a few key practices that help cross-functional teams at GameChanger stay aligned as ideas move from concept to execution.
“It starts with communication,” Rhodes said. “We stay close as teams and create an environment where people feel comfortable sharing ideas, challenging each other and working through disagreements.”
Next, it’s about having a clear process and a strong culture of accountability, he said. Everyone involved must understand their role, what success looks like and how key decisions get made.
“That combination allows us to move quickly without losing alignment,” Rhodes said.
Leaders also lean on structured planning frameworks like “VOST” — vision, objectives, strategies and tactics — to stay aligned, Shapiro said.
“I firmly believe that teams need to be aligned before they’re empowered — otherwise, you risk fragmented efforts and slower progress,” Shapiro said.
What Is VOST and How Does It Help Teams Collaborate?
VOST (Vision, Objectives, Strategies, Tactics) is a structured planning framework that helps teams bridge high-level goals with actionable steps. Once there’s a long-term vision, leaders define measurable objectives to define success. Then, they outline strategies to achieve those objectives, and conclude the planning process with outlining specific tactics to implement the strategy.
Kleinbaum Milner added that strong collaboration starts with trust and shared intent.
“Our teams are aligned around a common goal — doing what’s best for our users, our community, and the long-term success of the company, which creates a foundation where people can move quickly and challenge each other constructively,” she said.
GameChanger teammates are also encouraged to lean into the culture of experimentation and data-driven decision-making, which further helps teams stay aligned as ideas evolve.
“When teams know we’re all trying to win and are willing to test, learn and adapt, it becomes much easier to move from concept to execution without friction,” Kleinbaum Milner said.
What’s Next for GameChanger’s Product Growth
As every sports fan knows, each sport has its own nuances, user behaviors and opportunities. What excites Rhodes and his peers about the road ahead is the opportunity to build for each sport in a more intentional way while still staying unified as a company and consistent in their standard of quality.
“We are getting better at creating products that feel tailored to those differences, while also bringing a unified approach to how we go to market,” Rhodes said. “That balance between focus and consistency is where a lot of the next phase of growth will come from.”
GameChanger’s “contagious and mission-driven” culture will also help teams stay aligned as the company grows, Shapiro said. Many GameChanger teammates are former youth athletes, which shows up in the way that collaboration feels natural, feedback is viewed as coaching, and there is a shared belief that winning is a team sport, Kleinbaum Milner said.
“As we grow, I’m excited about scaling that culture without losing it, while also evolving how we operate,” Kleinbaum Milner said. “Bringing in best-in-class tools, processes and structure will allow us to work even more effectively together so we can maintain that team-first mindset while operating at a much larger scale.”
In Shapiro’s first few weeks working at the youth sports tech company, teammates’ shared passion for impacting youth sports stood out to him as particularly special. That cultural foundation, combined with collaboration alongside parent company DICK’S Sporting Goods, truly positions GameChanger to become the “Home of Youth Sports,” he added.
“I’m excited about what we can build together in this next chapter,” Shapiro said.
