Overview

We are seeking an Accounting Manager to join our Accounting & Finance Team reporting to the Director of Finance & Accounting. This role will oversee the day-to-day operations of the AP function, with a primary focus on inventory accounting, accounts payable, lease accounting, audit support, and the financial close process. This role also plays a key part in process improvement initiatives, system enhancements, and strengthening internal controls to support the Company’s continued growth while contributing to a collaborative, high-performing, and values-driven workplace.


This position is primarily based in our Greenpoint, Brooklyn office and follows a hybrid schedule, dependent on role and business needs.


About the role

Essential Functions:

  • Assist in managing the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process, including review of journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules. 
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of financial reporting deliverables and support preparation of financial reports and analysis for management. 
  • Manage business licenses, reporting and compliance.
  • Analyze inventory trends and variances and ensure inventory accounting complies with applicable accounting standards and company policies.
  • Oversee the Accounts Payable function to ensure timely and accurate invoice processing and payments. 
  • Oversee Real Estate accounting and ensure compliance with applicable accounting guidance. 
  • Support annual financial statement and state audits, including preparation of audit schedules, responding to audit requests, and assisting with internal controls and accounting policy documentation.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to strengthen internal controls, improve reporting efficiency, and reduce manual processes. 
  • Assist in developing accounting policies and procedures and support system implementations, upgrades, and automation initiatives.
  • Assist in overseeing the daily workflow and performance of the accounting team, including Accounts Payable and lease accounting. 
  • Review work prepared by team members, provide training and guidance, and assist in prioritizing workloads and meeting deadlines. 
  • Support employee development, cross-training, documentation, and process improvement initiatives.


Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Begin to implement AI technology to streamline Accounting processes and reporting.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings to support business initiatives and financial reporting needs. 
  • Assist with special projects, financial analysis, and reporting as needed. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned based on business needs.

What we are looking for

Skills & Requirements:

  • Minimum 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in retail or inventory-based environments. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of inventory accounting and financial close processes. 
  • Experience overseeing Accounts Payable and/or staff preferred. 
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required. 
  • Experience with ERP/accounting systems such as Microsoft Great Plains or NetSuite.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. 
  • Demonstrated ability to identify process improvement opportunities and implement solutions. 
  • Prior experience in a supervisory or lead role preferred.


Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to access and navigate various department at the organization's facilities.

Pay Transparency & Disclaimer

$120,000 – $135,000, depending on experience, skills, and qualifications.


 Compensation and benefits may vary based on role, location, and eligibility. J.McLaughlin reserves the right to modify compensation and benefit programs at any time, in accordance with applicable laws.
