The Team You’ll Work With:
The NYC Office of Community Safety advances a whole-of-government approach to violence prevention and public safety that addresses gun violence prevention, hate crime prevention, survivor services, domestic violence prevention, and innovations in crisis response services. The Office oversees the Office of Crime Victim Services, Office to Prevent Gun Violence, Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence, Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes and the Office of Community Mental Health.
The Problems You’ll Solve:
The Chief of Staff serves as the Commissioner's principal advisor and leads the Office of the Commissioner. Reporting directly to the Commissioner, the Chief of Staff is responsible for driving organizational strategy, coordinating executive priorities, and ensuring alignment across the Office of Community Safety. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Chief of Staff oversees communications, external affairs, and strategic initiatives; supervises the Deputy Chief of Staff; and works closely with City Hall, partner agencies, elected officials, and community stakeholders to advance the Office's mission and strategic priorities.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Organizational Strategy and Executive Leadership
- Serve as the Commissioner's principal advisor on organizational strategy, agency priorities, and executive decision-making.
- Lead the Office of the Commissioner and coordinate executive priorities across the Office.
- Work closely with the Deputy Mayor of Community Safety and agency leadership to support the continued development of the Office of Community Safety and its transition into a standalone City agency.
- Represent the Commissioner in internal and external meetings, as appropriate.
Strategic Initiatives
- Lead high-priority strategic initiatives on behalf of the Commissioner.
- Coordinate cross-divisional and cross-agency initiatives that advance the Office's strategic priorities.
- Identify opportunities to strengthen the Office's impact through strategic partnerships, policy development, and innovative programs.
- Oversee special projects requiring executive leadership and coordination.
External Affairs and Strategic Partnerships
- Lead the Office's strategy for engagement with City Hall, elected officials, government agencies, community-based organizations, advocates, philanthropic partners, and other external stakeholders.
- Serve as the Office's primary liaison to key City, State, and Federal agencies and elected officials.
- Coordinate cross-agency initiatives, advisory boards, and strategic partnerships that advance agency priorities.
- Monitor emerging legislation, policy developments, and external issues relevant to OCS priorities.
Communications
- Lead the Office's communications strategy in partnership with the Mayor's Office of Communications.
- Ensure consistent messaging and branding across OCS divisions, initiatives, and public-facing materials.
- Oversee communications plans supporting agency priorities and major initiatives.
- Review and approve high-profile external communications, as appropriate.
Leadership and Management
- Supervise the Deputy Chief of Staff and the Office's communications and external affairs staff.
- Lead and develop a high-performing team by setting clear expectations, promoting accountability, and supporting professional growth.
- Foster collaboration across divisions and ensure effective execution of executive priorities.
Additional Responsibilities
- Work closely with members of the Senior Leadership Team to advance agency priorities.
- Lead or support high-priority initiatives requiring coordination across multiple divisions, City Hall, and partner agencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- 7+ years of progressively responsible professional experience in government, public administration, public policy, communications, intergovernmental affairs, strategy, or a related field.

Qualifications

1. Do you have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university?
2. Do you have an associate degree from an accredited college or university along with two (2) years of experience with administrative, analytic, coordinative, supervisory or liaison responsibilities?
3. Do you have a four-year high school diploma, or its educational equivalent approved by a state's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization along with four (4) years of experience as described in question "2" above?
4. Do you have a satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to that described in questions "1," "2," and/or "3" above?
