Location:

New York, NY

GQ is looking for a sharp, curious and culturally engaged Commerce Writer, Lifestyle to join the GQ Commerce team, with a focus on grooming, wellness, fitness and lifestyle.

This role is suited to a multi-faceted writer and storyteller who combines strong editorial judgment, subject-matter curiosity and an analytical mindset. We’re looking for someone who can understand what audiences are searching for, create a compelling angle, test products and experiences, and translate those insights into authoritative and engaging content. They should be as comfortable developing an SEO- or GEO-led evergreen story as they are writing a first-person review, producing newsletter copy or creating social-first video content.

First-person experience will be an important part of the role. We are looking for someone who is curious, hands-on and willing to test products, try new routines and experiences, speak with experts and turn firsthand reporting into credible and informative recommendations.

This writer should also be comfortable developing stories for multiple platforms and formats, understanding how an idea can be adapted across GQ.com, newsletters, search, social and video while maintaining a consistent editorial voice.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Write distinctive, authoritative commerce and service journalism across GQ’s Lifestyle categories, with a particular focus on grooming, wellness, fitness and modern lifestyle.
  • Develop a strong editorial point of view within these categories, identifying the products, brands, routines, services and emerging trends relevant to the GQ audience.
  • Produce a mix of product recommendations, reviews, first-person testing, service journalism, evergreen guides, reported features and culturally relevant commerce stories.
  • Think beyond the written article and tell stories across platforms, adapting ideas for GQ.com, newsletters, social media and video.
  • Be comfortable producing social-first, UGC-style and personality-led content, including appearing in short-form video where appropriate.
  • Apply SEO and GEO best practices to ensure GQ’s expertise and recommendations are discoverable without compromising editorial quality or voice.
  • Bring a strong analytical mindset to the role, regularly reviewing audience and commerce performance to understand what is resonating, where opportunities exist and how content can be improved.
  • Have an understanding of top performing brands, retailers and products within the Lifestyle category.
  • Use search trends, audience behavior and performance data to identify what readers are looking for, optimize existing content and inform future editorial ideas.
  • Understand when to update, reframe, expand or retire content based on performance, changing audience demand and shifts in search behavior.
  • Develop compelling franchises and repeatable formats that can build audience loyalty and establish GQ as an authority across Lifestyle.
  • Collaborate with editorial, social, video, design, audience development, partnerships and other teams to ensure strong execution and promotion across channels.
  • Build and maintain relationships with brands, experts, PR contacts and other sources across grooming, wellness, fitness and lifestyle.
  • Maintain GQ’s editorial standards and reader trust, ensuring recommendations are credible, independent, useful and grounded in genuine expertise or experience.

Skills & Qualifications:
  • 2+ years writing and creating content in a fast-paced digital media environment, ideally across commerce, lifestyle or service journalism.
  • A strong, editorially engaging writing voice and the ability to combine authority, utility and personality.
  • Genuine curiosity and knowledge in Lifestyle — particularly grooming, wellness, fitness and the wider cultural landscape.
  • Strong knowledge of SEO best practices and an analytical mindset, using audience, search and commerce data to identify opportunities and improve performance.
  • Comfortable creating content across articles, newsletters, social and short-form video, including UGC and first-person storytelling.
  • An understanding of affiliate commerce and the relationship between editorial storytelling, audience engagement and commercial performance.
  • A highly collaborative, self-motivated approach, with the ability to work across teams and manage multiple stories, platforms and deadlines simultaneously.

Above all, we’re looking for someone with curiosity, judgment and a clear editorial point of view: a journalist who understands both what audiences are searching for and how to turn those needs into distinctive, authoritative GQ storytelling.

The expected base salary range for this position is from $75,000-$83,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.

In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, successful candidates may also be eligible to receive discretionary bonus compensation.

This is a guild position.
