TheGuarantors is a fintech company helping multifamily owners and operators mitigate leasing risk while expanding access for renters. With a deep understanding of owner, operator, and renter needs, we believe renters deserve better access to the home of their choice and operators deserve greater protection and growth opportunities. That’s why we’re leveraging our real estate expertise and using AI-driven renter underwriting to help operators qualify renters faster while mitigating the financial risk of renter default. With $7B+ in lease value protected, we work with 9 of the country’s top 10 operators, are the #1 lease guarantee provider nationwide, and have consistently been named one of Inc. 5000’s fastest-growing companies, Forbes’ Best Startup Employers, Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500.

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a technical, hands-on Controller to serve as the right hand to our CFO. Reporting directly to the CFO and working closely with the CEO, you’ll own our accounting function end to end, from close and reporting to audit, technical accounting, and investor reporting.

This is not a role for maintaining the status quo. We expect our Controller to rebuild how finance works, using AI and modern tooling to redesign our close, reconciliation, and reporting processes so the team scales without adding headcount at the same rate as the business.

This role is ideal for a licensed CPA with deep technical accounting skills, insurance industry experience, and the judgment to act as a true partner to the CFO. You thrive in high-accountability environments, take pride in accurate and well-documented work, and are energized by building rather than inheriting.

Location

This is a hybrid role based in our NYC office, with an expectation of 3–4 days per week in office.

What You’ll Do
  • Serve as the CFO’s primary partner on accounting, reporting, and finance operations, stepping in to lead on priorities as needed
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close, including review of journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analysis
  • Lead technical accounting for complex and non-routine transactions
  • Redesign core finance processes using AI and automation, evaluating, implementing, and scaling tools that shorten the close, reduce manual work, and strengthen controls
  • Oversee premium accounting, including monthly premium remittances and reconciliations with insurance carrier partners and fiduciary/trust account management
  • Design and maintain a scalable internal control environment appropriate for a growing, investor-backed company
  • Lead the annual audit and serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors
  • Prepare financial statements, board materials, and investor and lender reporting, including covenant compliance
  • Oversee regulatory filings and tax compliance in partnership with outside advisors
  • Collaborate with FP&A, Legal, Operations, and Product to ensure accurate reporting and turn financial data into actionable insight
  • Build, mentor, and develop the accounting team, including the Assistant Controller
What You Bring
  • Active CPA license required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; Master’s a plus
  • 8+ years of relevant experience, including time at a public accounting firm (Big 4 or national firm preferred)
  • Insurance industry experience (carrier, MGA, or brokerage), including familiarity with premium accounting and carrier reconciliations
  • Deep technical command of U.S. GAAP and the ability to research, document, and defend accounting positions
  • Demonstrated proficiency using AI tools in finance work, with examples of processes you’ve rebuilt or automated and the results
  • Private equity–backed company experience strongly preferred, including investor reporting, lender covenants, and transaction support
  • Experience with NetSuite strongly preferred; comfort evaluating and implementing new finance systems
  • Track record of building or scaling internal controls and audit readiness
  • Excellent communication skills and the presence to partner with the CFO, CEO, board, and auditors
  • Self-starter with a builder’s mindset who thrives in a fast-paced environment

Benefits

  • Opportunities to make an impact within a fast growing company
  • Medical, dental, & vision insurance, beginning day one
  • Health savings account with employer contribution
  • Flexible spending accounts (healthcare, dependent care, commuter)
  • 401(k)
  • Generous PTO and paid holidays
  • In-office lunch perk
  • Flexible working hours
  • Paid parental leave
  • Company sponsored short and long term disability

Base Salary

The base salary range is between $210,000 - $240,000 annually.

Base salary does not include other forms of compensation or benefits. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including prior experience, expertise, location and current market data and may vary from the range above.
