ISS Media, a provider of publications, digital assets, conferences and research that are highly regarded for their editorial integrity, objectivity, and leadership within the retirement plan industry, is seeking an energetic journalist with an ability to break news and a fascination with finance to join our team in New York. 

Our brand, PLANADVISER, is a financial publication/brand whose target readers are the men and women who advise companies and individuals about their employer-sponsored retirement plan offerings. The PLANADVISER brand includes online daily news and newsletters, a print magazine, proprietary research, conferences, and multiple awards programs. 

We’re seeking someone who is personable enough to hold court with a room full of advisers and executives, and savvy enough to spot trends and news in the adviser and retirement plan industries. The right person will work with industry sources to deliver daily news stories, scoops and larger trend pieces on top advisory shops, recordkeepers, investment firms, etc —all backed with excellent writing skills. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Pitching, sourcing and writing spot news and long form news articles for the PLANADVISER website on a daily basis, as well as editing the work of colleagues for the same medium. 

  • Developing close contacts within the employer-sponsored retirement plan world. 

  • Breaking news by working sources, reporting from conferences and attending public meetings. 

  • Researching the world’s top retirement plans and advisers. 

  • Producing feature-length and long-form articles for the PLANADVISER website 

  • Managing multiple assignments while meeting daily, weekly and monthly deadlines. 

  • Sourcing and producing interviews with retirement plan/adviser/investment manager executives and industry thought leaders 

  • Producing daily and bi-monthly newsletters and posting stories to the web. 

  • Ability to network 

  • Helping develop video and podcast interviews with top industry executives. 

  • Helping to manage social media platforms. 

  

Qualifications 

  • 0-5 years of experience in journalism or financial services, who takes initiative in finding, pitching and delivering well-reported and “actionable” stories. Has a strong interest in issues affecting retirement plans in the form of spot news and long-form articles.

  • Ability to multitask and to deliver 1-2 news stories per day, plus regular feature and in-depth stories for both print and online 

  • Ability to read and understand and break news from court filings 

  • Knowledge of AP Style 

  • Good track record of reporting on the financial industry 

  • Good communication skills

  • Ability to “work a room” 

  • Bachelor’s degree required 

  • Added plus: HTML, WordPress, FinalCut Pro, podcast and copyediting experience.
