Nonprofit Fundraiser - $20/hr - Great for Students & Creatives

$20/hour guaranteed + bonuses | Full-Time & Part-Time | Brooklyn / NYC

Want work that builds your confidence, challenges you, and lets you talk about issues that actually matter?

Public Outreach is growing our NYC fundraising team.

We're looking for outgoing, curious people who want to make an impact while developing real-world skills in communication, fundraising, advocacy, and leadership.

This can be a great fit for students, recent graduates, performers, creatives, debaters, advocates, hospitality workers, and people looking to break into the nonprofit sector.

No fundraising experience is required. We provide paid training, ongoing coaching, and opportunities to grow.

What You'll Actually Do

This is face-to-face fundraising - not an office job.

You'll work throughout NYC with your team, speaking with members of the public about important nonprofit campaigns and inviting people to become monthly donors.

You'll:

  • Start conversations with people you've never met
  • Learn about the nonprofit campaign you're representing
  • Turn complex issues into engaging, human conversations
  • Tell stories and explain why the work matters
  • Answer questions and handle objections
  • Ask people directly to become monthly donors
  • Work toward clear fundraising goals
  • Practice your approach and receive regular coaching

You'll never fundraise alone. You'll work alongside a team, and your leaders have done this work themselves.

Talk About Issues That Matter

Depending on your campaign, your conversations may involve:

  • Humanitarian aid
  • Reproductive rights
  • Civil liberties and human rights
  • Environmental issues
  • Global poverty and food insecurity
  • Education and opportunity
  • Support for children and families
  • Social justice
  • Communities affected by conflict and displacement

You don't need to arrive as an expert.

You do need to be curious, willing to learn, and comfortable having meaningful conversations about serious issues.

Flexible - But Reliable

We know students, performers, and creatives often need flexibility around classes, auditions, rehearsals, and other commitments.

We can work with that - but we also need consistency.

You must be able to commit to at least 3 full 7.5-hour shifts per week.

Shifts generally run 12:30 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Sunday, with some variation in hours on weekends.

Full-time team members can work additional days.

This isn't a job where you can drop in for a few hours between classes or gigs. When you're scheduled, we need you for the full shift.

This Job Will Challenge You

You'll hear "no" more often than "yes."

Fundraising takes resilience. You'll learn how to reset after rejection, adjust your approach, and confidently start the next conversation.

You'll also spend much of your shift walking, standing, and exploring NYC with your team.

And yes - this is outdoor work.

New York has real seasons. You'll experience heat, cold, wind, rain, and changing weather throughout the year.

We never send our teams out in unsafe conditions, and we provide practical support during difficult weather. But you should be prepared to dress appropriately and be comfortable working outdoors.

If you're looking for easy work where nobody measures your results, this probably isn't the job for you.

If you want a job that can make you a stronger communicator, more confident approaching people, and more resilient when things don't go your way, you may love it here.

Build Your Career Here

This doesn't have to be just a student job.

Our leaders are promoted from within.

Many started as fundraisers themselves before moving into training, coaching, leadership, management, recruitment, and other opportunities.

You'll build practical skills in:

  • Public speaking
  • Persuasive communication
  • Storytelling
  • Community outreach
  • Donor engagement
  • Handling objections
  • Goal setting
  • Receiving and applying feedback
  • Leadership

This can be your entry point into the nonprofit sector - or the beginning of your career right here at Public Outreach.

Students, Creatives & Strong Communicators Welcome

People with backgrounds in theatre, performance, political science, debate, advocacy, student organizing, communications, hospitality, sales, and other public-facing work can do especially well here.

Students and recent grads from NYC schools including NYU, The New School, Pratt, Brooklyn College, Pace, Juilliard, and other colleges and universities are encouraged to apply.

What matters most isn't where you studied.

We're looking for people who are curious, prepared, resilient, reliable, and willing to learn.

Speak Another Language?

We'd love to hear from you.

NYC is incredibly diverse, and additional language skills can be an asset when connecting with people and communities throughout the city.

Spanish and other language skills are especially welcome, but are not required.

Pay & Benefits
  • $20/hour guaranteed
  • Bonuses on top of your hourly wage
  • Regular pay reviews
  • Paid training from day one
  • Full-time and part-time opportunities
  • Health, dental, and vision benefits for eligible full-time employees and their families after 3 months
  • Paid time off
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Opportunities to move into training and leadership

This is not commission-only work. Your hourly wage is guaranteed.

Fundraising performance still matters, and you'll receive coaching and support while working toward clear goals.

You May Thrive Here If You...
  • Enjoy meeting and talking with new people
  • Care about humanitarian, environmental, civil rights, or social-impact issues
  • Like learning about what's happening in the world
  • Can hear "no" without letting it ruin your day
  • Are willing to practice, prepare, and learn your campaign
  • Enjoy active work more than sitting behind a desk
  • Are comfortable receiving coaching
  • Like having goals to work toward
  • Want to become a stronger communicator
  • Are reliable and take your schedule seriously
  • Want opportunities to grow and lead
Come As You Are

We want Public Outreach to be a workplace where people can genuinely be themselves.

Our teams include members of the LGBTQ+ community, and creating an environment where people feel safe, respected, supported, and welcome matters to us.

Queer, trans, and applicants from underrepresented communities are welcome here.

Bring your personality, your perspective, and a willingness to learn.

Before You Apply

Please make sure you can realistically commit to the role:

  • You are 18+
  • You are legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
  • You can commit to at least 3 full 7.5-hour shifts every week
  • You are comfortable working outdoors throughout the year
  • You are comfortable standing and walking for much of your shift
  • You can confidently start conversations with strangers
  • You are comfortable with street and door-to-door fundraising
  • You can communicate confidently in English
  • You are comfortable working toward fundraising goals and receiving coaching
What Happens Next?

We're actively interviewing and looking for people who can start soon.

Selected applicants will be invited to a group interview where you'll learn more about Public Outreach, our nonprofit campaigns, and what face-to-face fundraising is actually like.
