Reporting Relationships:  Recreation Specialist report to the Assistant Program Director.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Program Director, Recreational Specialists are expected to perform the following duties and responsibilities.

  • Participates on the initial screening and assessment team to determine whether tenant is suitable for independent living and appropriate to be housed in the housing program.
  • Organize, lead, and promote interest in recreational activities such as arts, crafts, sports, games, gym, and other leisure time activities.
  • Meet with tenants regularly to ascertain and interpret tenant interests and develop activities to meet their interests.
  • Plan, coordinate, publicize, implement and facilitate support groups, special events and holiday programs.
  • Complete and maintain time and attendance forms.
  • Update and post printed materials and encourage tenant participation.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of new programs aimed at enhancing tenant’s motivation through socialization and the development of leisure time skills.
  • Document tenant participation in recreational activities in tenant's case record.
  • Meet and collaborate with agency personnel, community organizations, NYC Parks Department, and other professional personnel to plan balanced recreational programs for participants.
  • Escort tenants to recreational activities and other relevant events.
  • Communicates with the Social Services team to discuss tenant concerns or tenant's progress.
  • Attend social services meetings as necessary to coordinate services and participate as part of a team to ensure service delivery to all tenants.
  • The Recreation Specialist will participate and contribute to a program culture that is tenant-centered, outcome-oriented and dedicated to continuous quality improvement.
  • Programs and activities will be in line with program goals and objectives ensuring that tenants have access to an array of support, socialization and recreational activities.
  • Socialization activities will be enhanced to increase tenant involvement and develop their socialization skills. Tenants will be engaged and receptive to program services.
  • Track and report outcomes and provide data updates on tenants as directed.
  • Participate in on-site and off-site trainings and meetings.
  • The Employment Specialist will participate and contribute to a program culture that is tenant centered, outcome-oriented and dedicated to continuous quality improvement.
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with a focus on providing excellent services.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with a diverse community of tenants, program staff, and other departments.
  • Strong time management and organization skills.
  • Ensures exceptional attention to accuracy and quality of work.
  • Advocate and connect tenants to medical, mental health, and other supportive counseling services.
  • Regularly coordinate with all collateral contacts, including but not limited to family, providers, Workforce 1 Career Centers, HRA and NYS DOL etc.
  • Engage with community partners to provide services onsite and offsite.
  • Conduct visits in the tenant’s unit to ensure compliance with lease and program rules.
  • Effectively guide tenants through the process of application, qualification, re-determination for  SSI, SSDI, Medicaid, Medicare, HRA, SNAP, and other services as needed.
  • Manages an assigned caseload of tenants providing, ensuring comprehensive case management services are provided to both families and single adults.
  • Performs other related duties as may be requested by immediate supervisor and in his/her absence the Assistant Program Director.
Qualifications

Minimal Qualifications:

Degree Requirement: Bachelor’s degree in a related field (social work, mental health counseling, psychology, sociology etc.) with at least three (3) – five (5) years’ experience in a residential setting or,

  • Associate degree in a related field (social work, mental health counseling, psychology, sociology etc.) with at least five (5) years’ experience in a residential setting.

 

Other Qualifications:

  • Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with focus on providing excellent tenant services.
  • Strong written communication skills and ability to complete reports, as assigned
  • Demonstrate ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with a diverse community of residents, program staff and external vendors.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and apply problem solving skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a team oriented and outcomes focused environment.

 

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary range and benefits information for this position are being included in accordance with requirements of New York State and City pay transparency laws.  Please note that salaries may vary for different individuals in the same role based on several factors, including but not limited to location of the role, individuals’ competencies, education/professional certifications, qualifications/experience and performance in the role. 

Compensation

The base salary compensation range being offered for this role is $55,000.00 per year.
