Passionate about precision medicine and advancing the healthcare industry?

Recent advancements in underlying technology have finally made it possible for AI to impact clinical care in a meaningful way. Tempus' proprietary platform connects an entire ecosystem of real-world evidence to deliver real-time, actionable insights to physicians, providing critical information about the right treatments for the right patients, at the right time.

Location: [Chicago, IL; New York, NY; RTP, NC] This is a Hybrid role, so you are required to be onsite 3 days a week

About Tempus:

Tempus is a technology company advancing precision medicine through the practical application of AI in healthcare. We have built one of the largest libraries of multimodal clinical and molecular data, and an operating system to make that data accessible and useful — helping physicians make real-time, data-driven decisions and accelerating the development of new therapies. The breadth and quality of our data is a core competitive advantage. Realizing that advantage depends on continually bringing new, high-value data sources onto our platform — from genomic and pathology labs to EHR-integrated provider networks, real-world data aggregators, and clinical content partners — and integrating them in a way that is scalable, compliant, and genuinely useful to downstream products.

The Role:

We’re hiring a Director, Data Product & Operations to set the strategy, roadmap, and operating model for data partnerships and integrations across the Tempus data platform; and lead a cross-functional team of SMEs that delivers it. You will be the connective tissue between external data partners and our internal platform, clinical, and engineering teams and will define the strategy for what data we bring on, how we ingest and normalize it at scale, and how we turn it into a reliable, productized asset, while establishing the standards, processes, and cross-functional team that make it repeatable.

This is a leadership role for someone who is equally comfortable leading through others and operating in partner negotiations, a data model design reviews, and a roadmap prioritization discussions. You will represent Tempus to executive stakeholders at partner organizations, help shape company-level data strategy, and be accountable for the outcomes of our partnerships. You’ll work across a diverse partner landscape spanning genetic and oncology testing labs, genomics and sequencing providers, radiology imaging providers, EHR and provider data collaborations, FHIR-based health data platforms, and real-world data.

What You'll Do:

  • Own the data-source strategy and multi-quarter roadmap. Define the strategy and prioritization framework for which data sources and partners to integrate across the portfolio, balancing strategic value, clinical utility, technical effort, and compliance risk.

  • Lead the cross-functional team and operating model. Establish the cross-functional squad model — Connectivity Engineers, Data Product Engineers, and Domain SMEs — that executes integrations end to end, from intake through production launch and ongoing operations to support the ingress of new data sources and modalities at Tempus.

  • Own executive-level partner relationships. Work alongside commercial partners and legal leadership to evaluate prospective partners, shape the strategy for data-sharing arrangements, and translate partnership terms into concrete product and integration requirements, serving as a senior point of contact for partners.

  • Own delivery and operational excellence across the portfolio. Establish scalable, repeatable processes for onboarding new data sources — ingestion, normalization, quality validation, and ongoing integration monitoring — and hold the organization accountable to delivery timelines and operational SLAs, in partnership with engineering and data teams.

  • Set data product requirements. Own the requirements for data formats, interoperability standards (e.g., FHIR, HL7), metadata, and provenance so every source across the platform is consistent and trustworthy, and so standards scale as the portfolio grows.

  • Own the productization strategy for integrated data. Ensure integrated data is discoverable and well-documented for the clinical, product, and research teams who build on the platform; gather their requirements and feed them back into the roadmap and strategy.

  • Own outcomes and operational metrics. Define, set targets for, and report on the metrics for data coverage, completeness, freshness, quality, and adoption across all of our data partnerships; and use them to drive continuous improvement and inform leadership decisions.

  • Own compliance and risk posture. Partner with privacy, security, and regulatory leaders to ensure every integration meets HIPAA and applicable data-governance, consent, and de-identification requirements by design and help shape data-governance policy as the function scales.

What You'll Bring:

  • 10+ years in product management with experience owning data, platform, or integration products (or comparable experience in data engineering, technical program management, or partnerships with a strong product orientation).

  • A track record of setting strategy and operating model for a function or portfolio (not just executing a roadmap) and scaling it over time.

  • Deep familiarity with healthcare data standards and interoperability (FHIR, HL7, OMOP, ICD/SNOMED/LOINC) and real-world data (RWD/RWE).

  • A strong technical foundation: comfort with data models, APIs, ETL/ELT pipelines, and data quality concepts, and the ability to engage credibly with engineers on integration design.

  • Experience working with and influencing external partners at the executive level; translating ambiguous agreements into clear requirements and managing relationships across organizational boundaries.

  • Demonstrated ability to set strategy, prioritize ruthlessly, and drive execution across an organization; influencing engineering, legal, business development, and clinical leaders and stakeholders without direct authority.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication; able to move fluidly between a partner conversation, an executive briefing, and a technical design discussion.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience building or scaling data partnerships

  • Experience in healthcare, life sciences, genomics, or clinical data.

  • Working knowledge of HIPAA, data privacy, consent, and de-identification practices.

  • Experience with cloud data platforms and modern data infrastructure.

  • Hands-on with SQL or scripting for data exploration and validation.

Why This Role Matters:

Tempus' mission depends on the depth, breadth, and quality of its data. In this role you directly expand that foundation — every source you bring onto the platform makes our products smarter, our research more powerful, and our impact on patients more real.

$170,000-$200,000

The expected salary range above is applicable if the role is performed from Illinois and may vary for other locations (California, Colorado, New York).
