Morningstar's Analytics group turns data into the methodologies, analytics, and insights that help investors make better decisions. We build proprietary intelligence across hundreds of thousands of securities and the portfolios that hold them: equities, fixed income, managed investments, and, increasingly, private and alternative assets. We are applying AI to make that intelligence more accessible and to bring it into investors' research and portfolio workflows. As one of the largest independent sources of fund, equity, and credit data and research in the world, Morningstar is guided by a single mission — empowering investor success.

We are seeking a Senior Quantitative Analyst to join our Quantitative Research team. This role will contribute to developing and enhancing the Morningstar Risk analytics platform, where we apply proprietary methodologies on analyzing the investment risk of stocks, bonds, managed investments, and portfolios. You will analyze large datasets across different asset classes and produce insights that help investors make better decisions.

You'll work with real independence: scoping and owning a project from framing through production, resolving ambiguous judgment calls. You'll also be sought out for expertise in a defined area and expected to improve the quality of work and practice around you.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a strong understanding of Morningstar’s proprietary methodologies and become a subject-matter expert of Morningstar’s Risk analytical products.
  • Work closely with other quantitative analysts and software engineers to develop and implement methodologies to advance the analytical suites.
  • Become a subject-matter expert on multiple investment themes, particularly on fixed income, equity, and mutual funds.
  • Develop a strong understanding of Morningstar data systems and provide support on model validation and client inquiry.
  • Own projects end to end, from scoping and data validation through methodology design, testing, documentation, and production handoff, and serve as the primary contact for Product and Engineering.
  • Review peers’ work on substance — whether the analytic is sound, the insight holds, and it will be intuitive and actionable for whoever uses it — with feedback that improve the work.
  • Evaluate AI approaches critically and promote responsible AI practice with real standards attached.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree with 5 years of experience, or a master’s degree with 3 years of experience in quantitative research, financial data, or a related field, with a track record of owning projects end to end, from framing through production.
  • Strong knowledge of investing and financial markets and products, equivalent to what's expected of a CFA charter holder.
  • Solid command of statistical/econometric methods with application in finance.
  • Proficient in Python, SQL with experience building and maintaining production-quality code and documentation. Experience with Amazon Web Services tools such as S3, EMR, Athena is preferred.
  • A track record of developing and enhancing methodologies or analytics, with the technical depth to make judgement on the soundness of an approach.
  • Able to explain methodologies and complex concepts clearly to diverse audiences, from technical peers to non-technical stakeholders, and to communicate progress, risk, and trade-offs with product team and stakeholders.
