About David Energy

David Energy is creating a new kind of power company. We offer cheaper and cleaner energy than traditional Retail Electricity Providers (REPs) can, and we do so economically because we can tap into renewable supply (e.g. solar) and controllable capacity (e.g. batteries) anywhere it exists, including "behind" customers’ electricity meters. We’re a series A company aiming to run the grid on clean energy 24/7/365.

We’re rapidly scaling our "Beat the Utility" product which guarantees small commercial customers that their total electric spend will be less than their incumbent utility. We can make this guarantee because our technology and risk management unlock value that is not available to the utility. We're currently operating in NYC (NYISO Zone J) and scaling toward hundreds of new customer locations per month, with plans to expand to additional zones and ISOs across the Northeast.

What we’re looking for

We are seeking a skilled Senior Software Engineer to join our team at David Energy.

We’re looking for someone with experience in software development who is passionate about building clean energy solutions. You don’t need to have experience in the energy industry, but you should be excited about making a difference in the world. We believe that diverse teams lead to better solutions, so we encourage people from all backgrounds to apply.

We're building a software-native power plant and an automated trading desk. The power plant dispatches thousands of batteries across commercial buildings in real time. We tap into renewable supply and controllable battery capacity to lower what customers pay, while unlocking grid revenue streams that aren't available through their utility. The trading desk will buy wholesale electricity, manage hedges, and execute capacity and energy trades automatically. These two systems are the core of David Energy's business.

You'll inherit systems at a critical inflection point. We're building multi-battery device orchestration, capacity planning, and the early stages of automated trading infrastructure. You'll need to make architecture decisions that work at 10x our current scale, and collaborate directly with our Risk & Data organization.

We believe diverse teams build better systems. If this role excites you but you don't check every box, we'd still like to hear from you.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain the backend systems of our platform, including APIs, databases, and third-party integrations.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement new features and tools.

  • Ensure the security, scalability, and reliability of our systems.

Qualifications
  • You have 5+ years of experience in software development, with a focus on backend engineering.

  • You have demonstrated excellence in at least one back-end web framework (e.g., Flask, Django, Ruby on Rails, etc), cloud service (e.g. AWS, GCP), and RDBMS (e.g. PostgreSQL)

    • Note, we use Flask/Python, AWS, and Postgres but we're flexible on what experience you have as long as you're a quick learner!

  • You have experience designing systems that scale, building resilient, highly available services, and understand the tradeoffs between building a sophisticated architecture that works forever and a simple architecture that works today.

  • You have excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

  • You understand the importance of open-mindedness and compassion in cultivating a collaborative environment. You are committed to engaging constructively in brainstorming sessions and exchanging feedback on a wide range of ideas.

  • You have curiosity about how to use all tools around you to make you a better engineer, including AI-based development tooling such as Cursor, Claude Code, or whatever else has come out since we wrote this job description!

Benefits
  • Base salary range of $170,000 – $230,000 plus equity, depending on experience

  • Group medical and dental insurance

  • Flexible vacation/PTO policy

  • 401k

  • Hybrid office culture, with team members remote and working from our offices in New York City
