Stack Overflow is growing fast, and our technology needs just keep getting bigger. We’re looking for an IT Systems Engineer (ISE) to join our existing team and help us grow our internal systems and infrastructure. As an ISE, you’ll bring a DevOps mindset to system administration, always looking for ways to automate manual work and create repeatable, scalable systems and processes.

We’re looking for someone with experience in Systems Administration (or general Windows Server / Linux / networking experience), but we don’t expect you to know every other part of our stack coming in, so we’ll pair you with other members of the team to learn and develop your skills across our entire infrastructure (including our non-cloud infrastructure). We are a mixed Windows and Linux environment and expect this role to be adept at solving problems on both client machines and servers. Experience with Networking/VPN, Python, Google Cloud Platform, MacOS, Jira, and G Suite are a plus.

What you’ll work on:

  • Maintain our servers, network, and client systems
  • Improve our automated deployment of employee hardware to be a hands-free process
  • Work to improve security and usability of IT systems and hardware
  • Provide employees with the access and equipment they need to get the job done.
  • Automate employee onboarding so that new employees have a great first day
  • Maintain our VPN and improve remote employee experience
  • Document our ever-evolving systems and procedures
  • Work on IT projects from research to implementation
  • Be available to assist our IT support team in resolving helpdesk tickets

Our ecosystem includes:

  • Google Cloud Platform
  • VMware
  • Okta
  • Intune
  • Cisco and Meraki
  • Python
  • Windows and Linux servers
  • Mac and PC laptops
  • JAMF
  • Git and GitHub Enterprise
  • Bash
  • Powershell

Skills & Requirements

We’re looking for:

  • 3+ years of Linux and Windows Server experience
  • 3+ years of Google Cloud Platform experience or equivalent (i.e AWS, Azure, etc.)
  • Python experience with a developer’s mindset towards system administration (always looking to automate manual tasks)
  • Strong written communication skills and a strong inclination to “document as you go”
  • Linux experience in a mixed environment (we use mainly CentOS)
  • Familiarity with: Servers, Networking, DNS, and administering PaaS & SaaS

We like to see:

  • Experience managing G Suite, Jamf, Jira and Slack.
  • Programming beyond basic scripting (we use mainly Python and C#)
  • Knowledge of VMware, networking, wireless, VOIP and security systems in an enterprise environment
  • Experience working both on a team and on independent projects
  • Great communication and people skills
  • Self-motivated and proactive

Also note: If this job interests you but you aren’t certain if you meet all of the requirements, apply anyway!

Work Environment

We’re a remote-friendly team. Whether you work remotely or work out of our New York office (re-opening June 2021 at the earliest due to COVID-19), you’ll be part of a remote work culture that emphasizes online communication (Slack, GitHub, Hangouts, Zoom, Stack Overflow for Teams). While we’re generally very flexible on working hours, living and working within GMT-7:00 to GMT+2:00 time zones (US through Europe) is required for scheduling and interaction with your team. We also believe in strong work-life balance and are focused on making sure you have a positive work experience, in-office or remotely.

What you’ll get in return:

  • Flexible hours
  • 20 days paid vacation + holidays
  • Completely free health insurance - no copay, no premiums (US residents)
  • Generous parental leave (12-16 weeks at 100% pay), family care leave, and unlimited sick days
  • Employees will never be poked with a sharp stick
