THE ROLE

Sotheby’s is seeking a Senior Exhibition Designer to join our in-house Exhibition Design Team in New York. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a proven track record of conceiving premium spaces in a demanding and fast-paced environment. This individual will be responsible for a range of projects that comprise the physical experience and embodiment of Sotheby’s brand in our New York headquarters and wider North American regional offices and galleries. You will be expected to work 40 hrs a week, 3-5 days a week in office to cover site specific projects and working in-person with the team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborating closely with the in-house Exhibition team in New York and other Senior team leads to create building activations that bring to life Sotheby’s major sale series campaigns for the fine art and luxury categories as well as key standalone sale events, including single-owner auctions and brand partnerships while working within Sotheby’s brand guidelines and specific campaign and sale identities.
  • Seeing multiple, coinciding projects through from initial brief to completion including research, concept development, visual mock-ups -3D renderings and elevations- to overseeing final builds and installation. Work in collaboration with department leads, art directors and marketing partners.
  • Presenting designs and ideas to relevant and diverse stakeholders within the business, including senior management.
  • Work jointly with Sotheby’s Operations team, in-house colleagues and external vendors to estimate projects ensuring adherence to budgets and manage the contracts with relevant suppliers.
  • Meeting and co-working with the London Exhibition Design studio at a regular cadence to implement the evolving layout and visual display of Sotheby’s locations for auction, retail and Buy Now locations.
  • Extending the premium aesthetic of the brand to all client-facing areas and elements: New York lobby and reception, elevators, wayfinding, signage (print and digital), stanchions, flowers as well as enhancements and elements that communicate immediately and impactfully to visitors about key happenings in the building(s).
  • Overseeing design of Sotheby’s salesrooms for select auctions throughout each calendar year including room layout, elevations, build-outs, furniture, artwork placement, and enhancements such as vinyls and florals as needed.
  • Adhering to team exhibition process/design guidelines and maintaining a meticulous archive & record of work through project management.
  • Develop detailed and visually appealing 3D renderings for exhibition proposals, ensuring accuracy, quality, and alignment with client specifications.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

  • 7+ years of experience in exhibition design and production; ideally with museum and/or design studio experience that includes broad exposure to spatial design, trade shows or retail pop-ups with a strong understanding of built environments and concept of space.
  • Strong team player: Positive work ethic, reliable, adaptable, flexible, displays genuine commitment to make positive work relationships with other team members a priority. 
  • Firm knowledge of and experience with material specifications, production drawings, from pricing through construction documents
  • In-tune with current design trends in exhibition and digital media
  • Total fluency with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Rhino, V-Ray, Sketch-up, 3D Modeling & Rendering skills
  • Communicates with confidence (both written and spoken) and be committed, reliable and capable of working well as a part of a team as well as independently.
  • Highly motivated, organized, proactive, enthusiastic and resourceful.
  • Ability to work effectively on several projects simultaneously, meeting exhibition schedules time and within budget

The proposed base salary for this position ranges from $90,000-$105,000. In addition to base salary successful candidates are eligible to receive a discretionary bonus, as well as a competitive benefits package. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and, where applicable, licensure or certifications obtained. Market and organizational factors are also considered.
