About Pepper Auditors

Pepper's mission is to protect the integrity of every American's employee benefit plan. We are a fast-growing team of technologists and CPAs working to build a modern audit firm that can serve as the fulfillment engine for federally mandated compliance work streams.

About the role

Pepper is looking for cracked engineers with strong full-stack backgrounds to join us in building the audit firm of the future. You’ll think about our entire product surface, from client proposals to partnership integrations to audit automation. True end-to-end ownership across boring updates to the marketing site to exciting ai-native features; you should be excited to tackle it all. We will lean on you to have deep empathy with for our client experience with a product mindset and the technical chops to improve it.

You will partner with the founding team, audit staff, other engineers, and external partners to execute on the broader vision of solving employee benefit plan audits for the entire ecosystem. Your efforts will impact millions of Americans who rely on a workplace 401(k) / 403(b) for their financial security.

What you'll build

The system of record and the product surfaces for a regulated attest workflow:

  • The engagement command center — the internal tool where auditors drive engagements end to end: status and lifecycle, the review-and-sign-off flow, and an exception-first review surface for our CPAs.

  • The client and partner portal — document intake, status, and a UHNW-grade experience for plan sponsors, TPAs, and recordkeeper partners.

  • The data model — engagement → plan → audit year, evidence trails, and reproducibility good enough to survive peer review. Getting this exactly right is the foundation everything else sits on.

  • Integrations — recordkeeper and payroll file pipelines, programmatic invoicing, scheduling, and the contracts that connect the harness's outputs to the application layer.

  • Security and data isolation — we hold participant PII, payroll, and plan financials. Correct multi-tenant isolation, auth, audit logging, and evidence integrity

  • Reliability — observability, CI/CD, and the deploy pipeline that keeps a billable production system healthy

You're a strong fit if you

  • Are a senior full-stack / product engineer who ships in production and owns systems end to end. You can take a surface from data model to deployed feature without hand-holding.

  • Are strong in TypeScript/React and Node, and genuinely good at relational data modeling (Postgres/Supabase). You've designed schemas that held up as the product grew, not ones you had to tear out.

  • Treat security and data isolation as core engineering, not a compliance checkbox — auth, row-level isolation, sensitive-data handling, audit logging.

  • Have built internal tools or review/approval workflows people actually rely on, and you have real product judgment about what makes a working tool fast instead of just functional.

  • Are comfortable being an early engineer alongside the founder — high autonomy, broad ownership, and the judgment to know what to build well now versus what to defer.

Nice to haves

  • Familiarity with accounting, audit, ERISA, 401(k) administration, or financial document processing. You do not need audit experience. Our partner CPAs own the domain end-to-end, and the regulatory logic lives in versioned, deterministic code you'll help build.

  • Experience with fintech, regulated data, or other domains where data correctness and isolation are non-negotiable.

Logistics

  • Compensation: Estimated $150,000–$200,000 base + equity

  • Location: Remote-first (U.S.).¹ Columbus, Ohio is a plus but not required.

  • Reporting: Directly to the founding team, partnering closely with our partner CPAs on domain and review standards.
